Our Journey

Since 2019, Indigenous women from across the Northern Territory of Australia have designed and driven the Strong Women for Healthy Country Network, with support from Mimal Land Management.

In 2019, Rembarrnga, Dalabon, and Mayili Elders invited women caring for Country to meet at Bawurrbarnda in Central Arnhem Land. There, women from 32 ranger groups shared, connected and created Strong Women for Healthy Country Network. The women present at this first gathering articulated our shared vision:

“We are strong Indigenous women of the Northern Territory. We stand united as one strong voice. We commit to a network that gives equal power to the rights of all our women. Strong Women means Healthy Country.”

Today, this network has gained momentum and has grown to include women caring for country: rangers, healers, elders and health practitioners, with over 800 participants over the past 7 years. We recognise the holistic approach required to care for Country and build connections to support one another while doing the work that we do. Sharing traditional knowledge across generations and learning from each other is Strength.
